XIV CYBER WARFARE CONFERENCE

The future Italian Cyber set-up in the geopolitical era of the 21st century.

This year, the 14th National Conference on Cyber Warfare was held, with a focused focus on “Italy’s Future Cyber Assets in the 21st Century Geopolitical Era.”

The first stage of the event was held on March 23, 2023 at CASD Centro Alti Studi per la Difesa – Palazzo Salviati, Rome.

In the opening phase, titled “The Future Italian Cyber Arrangement in the 21st Century Geopolitical Era,” various topics were examined in relation to the current and future international environment. Aspects considered include the concept of active defense, the rationale for its implementation, and related technical, legal (constitutional and international) and geopolitical issues. In particular, topics such as attribution, desirable coordination with the Western alliance system, cognitive warfare, disinformation strategy, and active measures, along with covert operations, were addressed.

The second part of the conference, held on December 5, 2023 in Milan at the Belvedere Jannacci – Grattacielo Pirelli, focused on “What actions to take for an effective Cyber defense after decades of attacks?”

During this segment, the persistence of the cyber threat for several decades was emphasized. Although the offensive scenarios have not changed dramatically, the number of companies and institutions successfully affected remains high.

This phase set out to investigate the underlying causes of many realities’ inability to adequately defend themselves against the cyber threat. In fact, the conference brought together experts in the field to explore four crucial components of this issue, including lack of awareness of cyber risk among top management, obsolescence of deployed technologies, insufficient budget and shortage of qualified technical personnel.

The National Conference on Cyber Warfare (CWC) has been promoted since 2010 by the Center for Strategic, Interactional and Entrepreneurial Studies (CSSII) at the University of Florence, the European Center for Advanced Security (EUCACS), Cyber Academy and is designed in agreement with InTheCyber Group.
